On Thursday the 14th of
November 2019, we met at Chantal’s for our monthly Let’s talk meeting. She always welcomes us in a very friendly way
and we spend a nice time there exchanging in English, having tea and homemade
cake. There were seven of us: Chantal, Françoise, Gisèle, Monique, Myriam,
Philippe, Yvette.
We mostly talked about cinema since the topic of the day was the film Downton Abbey by Michael Engler. The characters are the same as in the successful series we saw previously on television. The movie takes place in 1927 when the Earl and Countess of Grantham, their family and staff who live in the castle are informed that King George V and Queen Mary will visit Downton Abbey in a tour through the country. What a fuss!!! All the actors and actresses are excellent and the dialogues are filled with a delicious British sense of humour.
Françoise told us that the
film she liked most this year was Chambre
212 by Christophe Honoré with Chiara Mastroianni and Vincent Lacoste, a
comedy dealing with the slow decline of a couple.
Chantal and Yvette were
impressed by the film Sorry we missed you
by Ken Loach, a social and family drama showing the dehumanization of workers
in our society. They said it was an “excellent Ken Loach” but warned us that it
was particularly tough.
Philippe was enthusiastic about a British film of the 1980s entitled Little Lord Fountleroy by Jacky Gold, starring Jacky Schroder and Alec Guinness, explaining to us that the atmosphere in both films was more or less alike, a family heritage being at stake.
Next time in December we will
be discussing the festival This is
England, knowing that the spirit of Christmas will already be in our minds.

Guy Myhill, membre du jury du festival This is England
Guy Myhill lives in Norwich. His feature film, The Goob, won numerous awards
including the Golden Hitchcock at Dinard Film Festival. He is currently working on a
8 hour TV series, Bracondale, with Universal/NBC, and is co writer/director on Pop,
a feature film with AM Pictures to be shot in Mauritius next spring.
He is developing another feature length project Hard Hat Man, with the BFI.
GUY MYHILL est un réalisateur résidant à Norwich. Son long métrage The Goob a remporté de nombreux prix, dont l’Hitchcock d’Or au Festival de Dinard. Il travaille actuellement sur Bracondale, une série en 8 épisodes en collaboration avec Universal/NBC. Il a co-écrit Pop, un long métrage qu’il mettra en scène pour AM Pictures et dont le tournage est prévu pour le printemps à l’Île Maurice. Il développe également un autre film, Hard Hat Man, avec le soutien du British Film Institute.
Anthony Baxter is one of the UK’s most accomplished and fearless documentary filmmakers. His iconic film You’ve Been Trumped(2011) won 12 awards and, has been translated into a dozen languages. Baxter’s A Dangerous Game (2014) is a searing indictment of the profound ecological and social impact of luxury golf resorts around the world. You’ve Been Trumped Too (2016) was released on the eve of the US Presidential vote, and was also critically acclaimed as a powerful and prescient warning of the nature of a Trump Presidency. “There could hardly be a more urgent or relevant film than this” wrote Peter Bradshaw in The Guardian. Baxter’s films have combined a distinctive voice, a creative flair, and an investigative persistence that “cannot be shaken off,” according to the New York Times. He has acted as a judge at Sheffield Doc/Fest, and given a variety of masterclasses in filmmaking in the United Kingdom, and also in Afghanistan. FLINT (2020), which recently had its preview screening at the Hamptons International Film Festival, has been in the making for five years and will be released next year.
Baxter is also directing Eye of the Storm, a documentary about leading Scottish landscape painter James Morrison for the BBC.

You’ve Been Trumped Too (2016) est sorti à la veille des élections présidentielles aux Etats-Unis, et a été bien reçu par la critique comme étant une puissante mise en garde annonciatrice sur la nature de la présidence Trump. « Il ne peut pratiquement pas y avoir de film plus pressant ou pertinent que celui-ci» a écrit Peter Bradshaw dans Le Guardian. Les films de Baxter ont combiné une voix particulière, un sens artistique, et une persévérance d’investigation dont « on ne peut pas se débarrasser », selon le New York Times. Il a été membre du jury au festival du documentaire de Sheffield, a donné de différentes master classes de cinéma au Royaume Uni, ainsi qu’en Afghanistan.
